An eight week course is eight, two hour sessions at the same time each week. A four week course is four, two hour sessions at the same time each week. Workshops are mostly one single two hour session. Class Times: Classes usually (although there are some variations) start at 9.00 am, 11.15 am and 1.30 pm, Monday to Thursday, and there is a Question and Answer session on Friday morning. Saturday workshops are usually held from 10.00 am to 12 noon.
Course Materials: Take home Course Manuals or Outlines and
disks (where necessary) with exercises, are provided with each course.

Fees: There is a fee payable for all courses and workshops:
The fee for the first course taken by a new member (usually an Introduction or Getting Started course) is $40 for Windows courses, or $30 for Apple or Tablet (iPad) courses, payable with the Membership Application.
Otherwise, eight week courses cost $40, four week courses cost $30 and workshops cost $10.

This year (2012) we are trialling four new courses and closing one.
In addition, to make things easier to understand, we have numbered all our courses. (See below.) Apple iPads: We are offering “hands on” courses in the use of iPads.
• You do not need to have your own iPad to join our courses, just an interest to learn.
The courses are named iPad: Getting Started 1 (001T) & 2 (191T). (Both 4 weeks). Two New Windows Courses:
We now have two new Windows courses (201W & 202W) that bring together a number of useful skills that have not been included in other courses, or are only in workshops.
We strongly recommend that you take these courses if the content is not familiar to you.

Course Closure: Courses based on Windows XP have had greatly declining numbers. For some time we have not been offering courses in Using WORD 2003 and Outlook Express. From Term 1 2012, we will no longer be timetabling the Intro course based on WORD 2003.
The numbering system indicates our recommended course progressions. The W identifies courses for Windows computers, the A is courses for
Apple computers and the T denotes Tablet computers (at present only iPads). Course Descriptions:
001W Introduction to PC Computers: (8 x 2 Hrs)
This is the introductory course that all new members with Windows computers are expected to take. It starts from the basics of use of mouse and keyboard, etc. Then using Microsoft WORD 2007/2010, it covers creating documents, editing text and saving and retrieving files. Those with some computer experience may bypass this course if they can demonstrate that they have equivalent knowledge and ability. 001A Getting Started with Apple Computers: (4 x 2 Hrs) This introductory course should be taken by all those who are starting to use an Apple computer. It covers the basics of using an Apple Computer, the Finder Application for organising files and setting your Preferences about how your Apple computer operates. 001T Getting Started with an iPad: (4 x 2 Hrs) This introductory course should be taken by all those who are starting to use an iPad. It covers the basics of using an iPad, your preferences in how your iPad operates and the main apps used: Internet, Email, Notes, Camera, Photos, Movies,iCloud. 101W Using WORD: (8 x 2 Hrs) This course covers Tabs, Numbering and bulleting, Tables, Autocorrect, Page Numbers, Headers and Footers, Inserting and formatting pictures, Text Boxes, WordArt. Pre-requisite: 001W. 102W Internet: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course uses Internet Explorer. You will learn about browsers and Internet Service Providers. How to use search engines to find information and how to navigate around the web and save web pages. Pre-requisite: 001W 103W Email: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course uses Windows Live Mail (This free Microsoft program cannot be installed in XP computers.) Learn how to send and receive emails, attach files and organise your emails. You will also learn about viruses, security and spam. Pre-requisite: 001W 101A Bean: (4 x 2 Hrs) This is a wordprocessing course using one of the popular Apple programs. Pre-requisite: 001A 102A Safari: (4 x 2 Hrs) This is the Apple Internet course. It covers all the Internet topics found in any Internet course. (Refer 102W) Pre-requisite: 001A 103A Mail: (4 x 2 Hrs) This is the Apple Email course. It covers all the Email topics found in any Email course. (Refer 103W) Pre-requisite: 001A 101T Getting Started with iPad 2: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course extends and consolidates 001T with additional apps. Pre-requisite: 001T 201W Maintenance & Security: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course covers all you need to maintain and keep your Windows computer secure. Topics covered are: Files and Folders, Defragmentation, Disk Cleanup, Installing and Uninstalling programs, System Restore, Windows Backup, Windows trouble Shooter, Security Settings: Action Centre. Aintivirus and antispyware, Firewalls, Updating Windows, Email and web safety. Pre-requisite: 001W 202W Computer Devices and Facilities: (4 x 2 Hrs) Topics covered are: Installing and managing hardware: Flash Drives, Printers, Cameras; and uding facilities: Scanning, Burning CDs, Skype, Internet radio. Pre-requisite: 001W 201T Maintaining and Troubleshooting the iPad: (4 x 2 Hrs) All you need to keep your iPad operating well.Pre-requisite 001T. 301W Photo Editing: (8 hrs) This course will take you into basic editing, i.e.resizing, cropping, cutting, and pasting photos etc. Learn how to organise your photos in your computer and find out how to choose the best program for more advanced work. Pre-reque: 101W 302W Publisher: (8 x 2 Hrs) This course is based on Microsoft Publisher. Creation of Information Sheets, Calendars, Flyers, Certificates, Greeting Cards, Newsletters, etc, are covered in this course. Pre-requisite 101W. 303W PowerPoint: (8 x 2 Hrs) With Powerpoint, you can make slide shows to show off your pictures and photos. Powerpoint is a Microsoft program that allows you to add text and sound to pictures and photographs and then show them in sequence. This is the program that is used in meetings for presentations. If you have some experience in using picture files, you should find this an interesting and not difficult course. Pre-requisites: Some knowledge of how to edit pictures would be of help. Pre-requisite 101W 304W Spreadsheets using Excel: (8 x 2 Hrs) What spreadsheets are and what you use them for. You will learn how to enter and edit text and data and use formulas to do calculations. How to navigate around the spreadsheet and copy and paste and drag and drop data and formulas. Use your spreadsheet to create a database. Learn how to format your spreadsheets with colour, shading and borders. Pre-requisite: 101W 305W Computers in Genealogy: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course is an introduction to the use of computers in Genealogy. It best suits those who are just starting to work in Genealogy. A tutorial that teaches students how to use the Family Tree Maker program and a look at other programs makes course participants well able to use genealogy programs. Research using the internet and Genealogy databases on the Internet is introduced. A resource CD is provided that includes much reference material and genealogy web sites. Pre-requisites: Some knowledge of file management preferred. 301A Video on the Apple: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course is not yet being offerred, but it will show Apple users how to edit and use videos.Pre-requisite 001A. 301T and 302T Wordprocessing and Spreadsheets on the iPad: (each 4 x 2 Hrs) These courses are not yet being offerred, but will use iPad apps and teach wordprocessing and spreadsheets in the iPad.Pre-requisite 001A. 401W Photoediting 2: (4 or 8 x 2 Hrs) This course is not yet being offerred, but will build on 301W.Pre-requisite 301W. 402W Publishing 2: (8 x 2 Hrs) This is an extension of the Desktop Publishing Course. The Course continues to develop skills in the Greeting Cards area and also introduces a great variety of other creations possible with Desktop Publishing. 403W PowerPoint 2: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course builds on 303W.Pre-requisite 303W. 404W Spreadsheets 2: (4 x 2 Hrs) This course builds on 304W.Pre-requisite 304W. Workshops: Two hours each, Fee: $10.00 Enrolments are required.
We usually schedule about 12 workshops per term, rotating the topics so that each one should be available several times per year. The more popular ones are timetabled more frequently.
